The 2020 pandemic was not going to get almost 100 Calgary young scientists down! After the cancellation of the Calgary Youth Science Fair for the first time in its 54-year history, 92 Calgary and area students uploaded their projects to Youth Science Canada’s Online STEM Fair. The Online Fair showcased 631 projects from across Canada online for the first time ever.
“When it comes to adapting and changing approaches, science is on the forefront - and many of this year’s would-be Calgary Youth Science Fair participants learned that first-hand by showing their projects virtually rather than in-person,” says CYSF President Katrina Watson.
“Congratulations to all of the young scientists who persisted and the teachers, family members and mentors that supported them. It is truly inspirational and leaves us very hopeful for the future of STEM.”
A team of volunteers from regional science fairs across the country, including almost 50 Calgarians, YSC National Judging Team members and sponsor representatives carefully reviewed the projects and awarded 275 virtual ribbons at three levels. Calgary students were awarded 22 regional ribbons, six Youth Science Canada ribbons and three Discovery Challenge ribbons.

“The Calgary Youth Science Fair Society would also like to thank all of the volunteers who put in countless hours this past year in preparation for the (cancelled) event,” says Watson. “Thank you also to the amazing sponsors and supporters that have been with us through the past few months while we navigated these unprecedented times. We hope to see everyone next year!”
